Together for Genomic medicine in Senegal

SEN-GENOME is an innovative research project led by Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) that aims to explore the genetic diversity of Senegalese populations. Its objective is to establish a national reference genomic resource to enhance our understanding of the history of human settlement in Senegal and support the development of personalized medicine. By analyzing genetic data from participants representing the country’s diverse ethnolinguistic communities, the project helps strengthen the representation of African populations in global genomic research. SEN-GENOME ultimately seeks to advance scientific innovation, improve disease prevention, and enhance healthcare delivery in Senegal.

Why SEN-GENOME matters

Closing the genomic data gap

African populations remain severely underrepresented in global genomic databases despite having the greatest genetic diversity. SEN-GENOME addresses this imbalance by generating locally relevant knowledge and building infrastructure in Senegal.

Map genetic diversity

Characterize genetic variation across Senegal’s ethnolinguistic communities and establish a representative reference sequence.

Develop biobanking, human genomics and bioinformatics capabilities while training researchers, clinicians and specialists.

Improve public health

Identify genetic factors linked to priority diseases and support the development of locally relevant diagnostic and prevention tools.

From recruitment to reference genome

Participant recruitment

1,015 participants recruited across all 14 administrative regions, covering 31 identified ethnolinguistic groups.

Biobank and DNA extraction

Sociodemographic, anthropometric and biological data were securely collected, with DNA extracted for all recruited participants.

Sequencing and genomic analysis

334 participants were selected for low-coverage whole-genome sequencing.

Next milestone

Senegalese reference genome

Long-read, high-coverage sequencing of representative samples will support construction of the national reference genome.
